Decorating in "High" Style

I love creating little vignettes when I decorate, but they are not relegated to table tops. My favorite way to keep the eye moving about the room is to look up when I decorate. Here are some examples in my home of "High" Style decorating.

The picture above is in my eating area of my kitchen. Notice I didn't put anything on top of the hutch because I loved the ornate look of the hutch itself. But, I did hang two vintage botanical prints above the hutch.

The barristers bookcase above is in my living room. It is filled with books, family photos, seashells and such. On the top of the bookcase, near the ceiling I have place an arrangement of vintage transferware dishes and a metal planter.

Now, the bookcase above is in our study/sunroom. It is also filled with books, family photos, vintage Italian planters, etc. Since this is the sunroom, I have a garden theme going with watering cans and a vintage green tole tray, covered in rose and white colored roses.

The bar above is on a wall between the living room and kitchen. I found this fun metal rooster at Pier One a couple of years ago. The red pot is a new piece and the pot on the far right is a very old olive pot from the old world.

This row of small black tole trays are in the sunroom above a French door leading to our living

And finally, here is a trio of vintage birdhouses, that I have collected over the years. They sit on top of the hutch in my dining room. So, if you think you are running out of surfaces to display your collections or art, just look up!

I do that too. I decorate up mainly because I really don't have alot of horizontal space to create vignettes (small house). I really like how you've placed those to prints on the wall above the cabinet - that way the lovely pediment isn't obstructed. Also, I like your collection of vintage birdhouses.

Perfect post for me. I struggle with my high spaces. I guess I could cop out and just place fake ivy, but it's not me. Thanks for the great ideas.

Your house looks lovely. I too love to decorate "up". I have a pair of blue and white roosters on top of my corner cupboard and a mirror and other decorations on top of an armoire.
Your mosaics are outstanding - I have tried once, so I can truly say they are wonderful.

what a good eye you have for arranging your treasures :)

well, I guess that is sort of a Duh Remark since you are an artist and part of that involves being able to arrange things :)

I do the same.... you should see the walls in the rooms where we have cathedral ceilings..... Frames, tole trays, etc., hung waaaaaay up! I have a trio of birdcages on top of an armoire that yours remind me of.
Thanks for the comments on my linen post, I do remember ladies carrying "real" hankies. When I was a little girl, I had ones on them with children's scenes; so sweet! Wish I still had them!

I have a birdhouse like your middle one~ mine is paler, I think, but the exact same thing, otherwise.
